NEW LUNCHEON PHOTOS FOR 24 GIRLS AND SPLIT!
May 2nd Lunch @ the Library Book Discussion for
24 Gi
rls in 7 Days
Our “Lunch @ the Library” book discussion for 24 Girls in 7 Days by Alex Bradley was a great success! Thank you to everyone who attended, especially Ms. Thomas and Mr. Greenbaum for their insightful questions and comments. A special thank you goes to Mr. Daugherty who read the book but wasn’t able to attend. He donated our trivia prizes, two t-shirts from the high school that Jack attended in the book. There were differing opinions about Jack’s escapades but everyone agreed that it was fun to read. And in honor of the main character’s search for the best soft serve ice cream in town we all enjoyed ice cream for dessert! Jack Grammar is a senior who has never really dated, but always wanted to go to prom. His “friends” decide to post an online ad in their school newspaper to help him find a prom date. The search begins as Jack tries to date 24 girls in the 7 days before prom! If you would like to attend a book discussion luncheon next year please contact Ms. Oltmans or Ms. Alberto in the PPCHS Media Center office on the 2nd floor of the library. The books are available from the “Books on Wheels” book cart during SSR. Photos below!
Split Book Discussion and Luncheon
Thank you to Ms. Thomas and all the students who attended the book discussion for Split, a story about the strengths and weaknesses of two brothers who grew up dealing with a physically abusive father. Christian moved out five years earlier and now Jace at 17 is out on his own trying to build a new life. The discussion dealt with the consequences of abuse, anger management, building relationships and we went over Jace’s Rules of Calmology:
Calmology Lesson #1: Run every day
Calmology Lesson #2: Speak if you have something to say.
Calmology Lesson #3: Fix what you can and accept what you can’t.

Lunch @ the Library Book Discussion for Ship Breaker
Thank you to everyone who attended December’s “Lunch @ the Library” book discussion for Ship Breaker by Paolo Bacigalupi, especially Ms. Rago and Dr. Glenn from the Science Department! The Book Discussion began with a video about actual ship breaking going on now in different parts of the world where working conditions are very similar to the conditions that characters in the book were dealing with. Students got into debates about environmentalism and what we can do to change our world in the future. Ship Breaker is a futuristic story filled with adventure and mystery that takes place right here on the Gulf Coast. The main character, Nailer, is a teenage boy with a dream to escape his gritty, dangerous job scavenging scrap metal from oil tanker wrecks. If you would like to check out the book come see Ms. Oltmans or Ms. Alberto in the PPCHS Media Center office on the 2nd floor of the library or look for the “Books on Wheels” book cart during SSR. Discussion for Shiver a Succes
s!
The Lunch @ the Library Book Discussion for Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater was held in the SW Regional Teen Room on Tuesday, April 19th. Check out the photos below! Shiver is a fantasy filled with romance and mystery that crosses the divide between our human world and the world of the wolf. Everyone enjoyed a delicious lunch of pizza, fruit and cookies while they sat in the Teen Room’s green lush “forest” complete with hanging vines. The only thing missing was the sound of howling wolves! Thank you to everyone who participated, the discussion was great! If you would like to read Shiver you can check it out from the SSR “Books on Wheels” cart or the SW Regional library. For more information check out the author’s website at www.maggiestiefvater.com:
“For years, Grace has watched the wolves in the woods behind her house. One yellow-eyed wolf—her wolf—is a chilling presence she can’t seem to live without. Meanwhile, Sam has lived two lives: In winter, the frozen woods, the protection of the pack, and the silent company of a fearless girl. In summer, a few precious months of being human…until the cold makes him shift back again.”
“After” Lunch @ the Library Book Discussion
Sparked a Rousing Discussion
Thank you to everyone who joined us for pizza, sodas, cookies and discussion in the library! A special thank you to Ms. Thomas and Ms. Buonomo for hosting the Lunch @ the Library book discussion with Ms. Oltmans. Check out more photos below! The discussion was nonstop and there was a heated debate about Devon, the main character in the novel, and what drove her to make her unfortunate choices. After is a chilling, emotional book that touches on a horrifying topic. You just can’t imagine that anyone is capable of doing what this girl is accused of. The book takes you into the mind of Devon, a straight A student and soccer player, who has allegedly committed a crime that has landed her in juvenile detention facing a possible life sentence. If you’d like to read After you can check it out from the SSR Books on Wheels book cart or in the Southwest Regional Library.
